~ Sweep As You Go ~

forget what's down the road tomorrow
sweep as far as your broom will reach
today
which is only the couple of square feet
in front of you, around you
and beneath you

sweep as you go

unfortunately
despite your expertise
your neighbors will have to
sweep their own two square feet
as will your spouse
your children, your parents and friends
everybody owning the patch
beneath their feet
each with their own broom
whether they choose
to use it or not
none of them needing
your help, guidance
or advice on how best to hold a broom
regardless of how spot on you are

just a willingness to
hold their own
and

sweep

  1. ep....yes we all need to use our own broom but it sure is nice when someone else points out the dirty spots.

Flory Canto did that for me and I will be forever grateful for that, returning there now and then for suggestions on what needs my attention the most....

Thank you for Flory Canto and I'm anxious to see where "flower & song art garden ephemera" takes me.

  2. awwwww, thanks, Mary. Hey! You're the first comment in the new patch here!

"New patch" -- that has a nice ring to it, don't you think? Yep, new era = a new patch - a bunch of 'no rhyme or reason' stuff just for the hell of it, the fun of it, or my own interest -- and a whole new graffiti wall, too, to archive my scratchings, doodles n' other stuff. Thnx for dropping by. xo

  3. I'm here too, El Po, walking quietly around, enjoying the garden and all the other treasures.

    Peace!

  4. Nice to see you, Kathryn! Another sign of spring: she is risen! or at least peeking around the corner. Nice to know you haven't gone far. Know that you are missed in one little cabin far, far away from this ol' world. There's always a seat at the table - and a mug to fill with coffee. Thanks for dropping by. Thinking of you often - wishing you the best.

  5. Dear El Po,

This is truly magnificent. What great wisdom, "Sweep as you go", that can be applied to EVERYTHING in life: writing, relationships, parenting, etc. And that broom is dynamite! Glorious!

  6. Hey, thanks, May. Yep, sweepin' as I go - trying to remember that, 'cuz otherwise, the creative imagination is waaaay to good at trying to anticipate [read worry about] what's around the next corner. Just sweeping what's under me today is usually more than enough [metaphorically speaking]. Imagine if at the end of our road we could look back at our life's path and say: "I kept it swept up. Not much left for others to clean up after me. ; )

By the way, I highly recommend getting a good broom and painting it with your own stories, symbols and words. Good therapy for about 15 buckaroos; handy, utilitarian, can sweep, inspire or kept by the door serve as an art object or martial arts staff for protection. That's alotta bang for the buck!
